Dante:  After a request for information from JoPo, I became curious about the DAS Comp AI.  Upon reading mention of it in a previous ScopeRise article indicating that it was a personal favorite of DAS and that the OEM company was also fully supportive and proud of it, I decided to investigate it further.  Here is an announcement from Audio Fanzine regarding the release of the original hardware.

Audio Fanzine: AIElectronik releases their last HVC (Hybrid Valve Compressor) lamp series compressor with two independent channels possibly coupled for stereo image treatment.  A bidirectional side chain circuit is present on the back side.  Each channel consist of two lamp polarized class A gain stages.  The input stage integrates a reduction circuit based on a photo-coupler.  The output stage offers 20dB more gain for adding level back to the processed signal.

After this triumphant fare, I wondered about the approach DAS would take in emulating this great classic.

Eric:  I made Comp AI when AIElectronik sent me one of their units.  It was very important for AIElectronik for us to keep it under wraps because it was kind of a secret, this great hardware.

One thing I can say is that if you use it like a real hardware then the sound is the same as the hardware.  In terms of harmonics, pre-harmonics, response on square noise, and on train of sinus its a one-to-one match.  AIElectronik was proud of DAS which was a great motivation to make it the best.

Olive:  We were very proud to introduce this new device DAS COMP AI.  It was born from a very very fine collaboration with a new French company, AI Electronik and DAS.

AIElectronik build hardware hi-end class A / tube stuff, HVP and HVC.  DAS Comp AI proposes the real approach of the HVC hardware from AI Electronik The dynamic treatment takes again the principal of RMS detection and follower with just the effect of the lamps.

A side chain is also included to optimize the treatment possibilities.
